Apple Records was a label meant to fulfill the Beatles’ artistic interests. They’d already perfected their own career so it was time to try new ventures. While it has a reputation as having been a “vanity” label, one listen to this “Greatest Hits” should alter that perception for good. Sure, the Beatles influence is felt. Mary Hopkin, a TV talent-show winner (hmmn), handles Paul McCartney’s surefire hit, “Those Were The Days.” George Harrison helped along Jackie Lomax with the White Album outtake, “Sour Milk Sea.” Badfinger made good on Beatlesque pop with the title track and “Day After Day” and are also featured here in their earlier incarnation as the Iveys with “Maybe Tomorrow.” Billy Preston delivered a dynamite cover of “My Sweet Lord” and “That’s the Way God Planned It.” Doris Troy’s “Ain’t That Cute” is thoroughly powerful. James Taylor’s “Carolina In My Mind” is one of his most enduring tracks. Chris Hodge’s powerfully psychedelic “We’re On Our Way” is exactly the kind of “great lost” track that makes this compilation a must have.
