On Milltowns, singer/songwriter Mark Erelli interprets tunes by the late folk legend Bill Morrissey, known for his darkly compassionate portraits of working-class New England. Bruised love songs (“Birches,” “Handsome Molly”), toasts to noble losers (“These Cold Fingers”), and jaunty road anthems (“Long Gone”) are served up with evocative folk/rock arrangements framing Erelli’s wistful yet resolute vocals. The album’s title track (and sole Erelli original) echoes Morrissey’s style with its storytelling craft and keen eye for detail. A salute by one eloquent troubadour to another, Milltowns is one of 2014’s best folk releases.
