The Pigeons Couldn't Sleep

The Pigeons Couldn't Sleep

Seemingly assigned permanent cult status, Emmy-nominated TV composer, children’s music and adult-contemporary singer-songwriter Peter Himmelman offers up more of the solid, introspective folk-blues-based songwriting that’s earned him critical accolades and his small but devoted following. “Just once I’d like to be on the winning team” he sings on “Winning Team” on his 2007 release The Pigeons Couldn’t Sleep, and it’s a sentiment that downplays the singer’s actual successes while addressing his virtual invisibility to the pop mainstream. The tune itself has a spirited groove, supportive female backing vocals and a modest pop sheen that makes it easily accessible, like many of this album’s fine tunes. But it’s Himmelman’s modesty, his every thinking man’s persona, that seems to obscure him. He’s the perfect gentleman in a sea of showman. The slow moving bluesy shuffles of the title track, “Good Idea” and “The Ship of Last Hope “ alongside the overriding sense of dejection that haunts “A Dog Can Drink Stagnant Water” and “If We Could Hold Each Other’s Hunger” are worthy downcast additions to this Minnesotan’s deepening catalog.
