Elements of plucky Ben Folds Five piano pop, bargain-basement new wave rhythms, and touches of elaborate orchestration color these sassy tunes that seem aimed down Tin Pan Alley. “Across Your Knee,” the opening cut from their second album, 2007’s Grand Animals, offers a full-on exposition of their every ambition, while the John Lennon-echo commandeering “The Fatalist” skewers the group towards a ’70s-‘80s anglo-pop that manifests even deeper with the glitzy David Bowie inspired funk of “Married Young.” Their Kinks admiration informs the showbiz shuffle and British vocal inflections of “Crown Victoria” and “Guard At Your Heel.” “The Ramp” channels Paul McCartney at the piano.
