After the death of their ‘80s keyboardist Brent Mydland, the Grateful Dead were in a tough spot. Fortunately, Bruce Hornsby soon stepped in; he brought a jazzy new vocabulary to the band’s sound, which this release beautifully documents. Hornsby’s intricate playing builds on the complex chord changes of tunes like "Victim or the Crime" and "Crazy Fingers." This provides an intriguing foil for Jerry Garcia’s exploratory guitar solos and makes for some of the prettiest material of the band’s later years.
